Aelathil is on the brink of civil war!

Once pampered and spoiled as the only heir to one of Aelathil’s most powerful lordlings, Callan’s world has been tipped upside down by King Ramsey and his mighty dragons. Now he must join the growing resistance or watch as everything his family stood for crumbles away to nothing.

After her father is mauled by one of the massive lion-men of the frozen north, Pyra must do her best to hold his seat as Lord until he recovers—all while teaching herself to control the magical spark smoldering inside her.

Together, Callan and Pyra will shape Aelathil’s future. For better or worse, they will stand Sentinel over the people that the King has targeted for destruction. Should they fail, Pyra’s people will be buried in the northern wastes and Callan’s family legacy will be turned to ash.

This is a really fantastic story! The characters were very well developed and highly engaging. The main antagonist, though not fully in the limelight in this first book, is really well thought out. I look forward to learning more about him in the next books, and especially learning more about the depth of his power. Callan is a really engaging character, and I could relate to him a lot as he grew in the story. The magic system overall is very well planned out, and the way the different mages in the story utilize it is believable. The creatures in the story are what really drew me in. I love creatures in fantasy, and in Sentinel I was in for a treat. The Visani are brilliantly written, and believably terrifying. The Fanir, of which we only encounter one in this book, is quite complex and equally well written. He is one of my favorite characters. The paladin, Dastynn, is easily one of my favorite characters. He has some amazing fight scenes. Finally, the dragons. The dragons are breathtaking, and uniquely done. They make for a deadly force to be reckoned with.

Sentinel The Ashen Court Book 1 edition by Chad Ballard Lindsey Burcar Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Very enjoyable story. Can't wait for the next book.
Good book! There were some spelling/grammar/sentence structure issues that detracted from the story (Mixing up his/her, duplicated words, using the wrong word like "hat" instead of "that", etc.) - enough that I didn't feel I could give it a 5/5.Some of the story flow was a bit awkward (Large leaps of time between paragraphs that weren't explicitly pointed out made me stop a few times to re-read parts) and one of the end plot lines felt like it could use a little more build-up to make it more exciting. However, I really like most of the characters (GO TORRUK!) and the plot was good. I think that another thorough pass by a critical editor really could have benefited this book. I hope my review doesn't hurt the author or dissuade readers from this book, because it was well worth the read and I look forward to the next one.
This was a good read. A good story. Ended very abruptly, but kept me interested throughout. Misspellings, bad grammar and wrong words (palindromes) at times but I enjoyed it. Slight warning for parents, it does have some foul language, but not much. Will read the next one.
I really enjoyed the concept and would like to see where this story is heading. I suggest the author get an editor to assist in spelling and grammatical errors.
Fun read with interesting characters and character development. Plot kept pointing to something, parallel plot lines never came together enough. You want some conclusion even if you have more books. Multiple spelling and grammar errors throughout. Yet, I did enjoy the book. It had a well developed world.
I enjoyed the book but was left wondering exactly what the plot was for the first book. It seems like the author does a really good job with the set up, but I am not sure what he was setting up. Hopefully the 2nd book will have more to it!
This was a totally enjoyable read! The author, Chad Ballard, captivates the imagination from the start, with his vivid imagery and descriptive style. I was drawn right away to the main character, Callan. The tale began when Callan was a boy, and suffered the terrible loss of his family. As Callan begins growing up and the story starts to unfold, I felt as if I were swept right along in his adventures! I look forward to the next book in the series to continue the tale, and see what my favorite characters have in store for them!
