Aspen Falls Colorado police detective, Chase Waters, is working the most interesting and difficult case of his career.
Interesting because mutilated bodies of young men and women are appearing regularly in and around his small mountain college town. Difficult because the victims are all Hispanic and that part of town tends to guard its secrets.
What he doesn't know is that everything is about to get a lot more personal.
"A compelling, complex and emotionally connected story." — L.J. Sellers, author of the bestselling Detective Jackson series
"A top-velocity cliff-hanger, and a thriller with heart. Brantley is the real thing." — Timothy Hallinan, Edgar-nominated author of the Poke Rafferty and Junior Bender series

This book is good - really, really good. I just finished it and my heart rate is just now starting to slow down. The story takes place in Aspen Falls, Colorado. Senior Detective Chase Waters is called to a crime scene. A body has been thrown into a dumpster. The murder obviously took place elsewhere and the taped off scene is just the dump site, leaving far fewer clues than a murder site. The victim is a young Hispanic male with most of his organs surgically removed. This reminds Chase of another case he has, an unidentified young Hispanic male found dead along a hiking trail. The young man had recently had a kidney removed. Then a young Hispanic woman walks into the police station and reports her seventeen year old sister missing. What is going on in Aspen Falls? You don't want to miss this book. The detectives are fully developed characters with their lives and problems going on throughout the investigation. They are not do-it-all characters who collect the evidence, run the tests, question the witnesses, and bag the perpetrators. These detectives are seasoned professionals who solve the case by building evidence bit by bit. There is a lot of tension and suspense. It will keep you entertained from beginning to end. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I think you will, too. Try it. You won't be sorry.

THE MISSINGS Aspen Falls Thrillers Book 2 edition by Peg Brantley Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
This is the second book I have read by this author and I'm looking forward to the next. I like the main characters. When that happens in a story I get hooked. Yes there are some areas that could be improved but all in all I enjoyed the plot and am glad I read it. I figured from the beginning that the story would be about black market organ selling. I enjoy the unfolding of the information gathered to find and stop the bad guy. I also like the crossover of some of the same characters from Red Tide. So I am looking forward to the next book in the Aspen Falls series.
Decent book, but a bit repetitive especially in the opening chapters. It's a quick read because the chapters are quite short. Actually, they are unnecessarily short. The author chose to label each chapter with the date and the place where the action is happening. Some of the chapters just keep following the action in the same place, so why a new chapter? Or why the label? This could have been handled differently with delineated sections or just combining chapters.
Anyway, there is a lot going on in this book. There are three police detectives who all have back stories. The lead detective is the most prominent character and his story is quite involved. A reader may think this will be hard to keep track of but because the book is so repetitive, it's not that difficult. Overall the story is intriguing with a lot of layers. There are a lot of characters, but each one is important in the end.
The writing is decent, the plot is decent, the characters are decent. It's a decent book.
Fast paced police novel, lots of personal twists to get engaged with the characters, intense drama. I highly recommend this for readers of murder mystery.
The Missings by Peg Brantley is set in a small resort town in the Colorado mountains. The local police department hs just begun to discover a serial killer who leaves badly mutilated bodies of Hispanics lying around here and there. Elizabeth Benevides, a member of the Hispanic community defies her family"s rule of silence and enlists the police in the disappearance of her younger sister. Together with Daniel, a fourth generation Hispanic detective, thoroughly Americanized, she sets out to solve the mystery even if it means interfering with the police responsibilities of the regular detective squad. The mysteries widen. Who are the men in the black car who are following the Chief of Detective's wife and daughter? What is happening in the nearby private clinic?. Who is the Hispanic named Tom Hanks? The reader begins to feel that this is a run up for an episode of Criminal Minds, except that the FBI agents will not be called in. The mystery is neatly tied up after some suspenseful happenings and the reader puts the book down with a feeling of satisfaction at having read a really good tale.
As I wrote in my review of Ms. Brantley's previous book, RED TIDE, I was not particularly impressed with the 3 Star reviews (which is what I normally read) to interest me into reading THE MISSINGS. That all changed when I read a preview excerpt at the end of RED TIDE. I am glad I read THE MISSINGS. To me, both books were equally interesting. Both had scenarios that could happen. In fact, I am sure the illegal organ harvesting, which is the topic of THE MISSINGS, actually does happen with alarming frequency.
Again, both the writing and editing are exceptional. The topic of using 'illegals' as a source of this horrific harvesting was well drawn out. The author shows so many facets of human nature in presenting this topic. This includes the detectives' feelings towards illegals, the foreign community's distrust of law enforcement, the overwhelming feeling of losing a loved one to the lack of legally available organ donations and the extreme greed needed to take advantage of people at their most vulnerable. If this story does nothing else, it brings to light just how important voluntary organ donation is.
There are some sub storylines that I felt were not truly essential to the plot, including Detective Waters wife's past and the whole Judge Atkins ordeal; Detective Johnson's attempts to adopt a child. These could easily have been omitted and it would not have affected the storyline.
I would recommend this book to all interested in 'Medical Mystery' plots. I feel the writing is equal to that of Robin Cook. Ms. Brantley has become another author which I have added to my "favorites" list and look forward to reading more of her work.
